The new regulations for Accountable Care Organizations have been released from the Office of the National Coordinator. As expected, ACOs are heavily reliant on EMR software technology. (Electronic Medical Records.) It's clear now that the Meaningful Use criteria is simply laying the foundation. Organizations now need to able to step up their technical usage.
If meaningful use was all about getting data into an EMR software system, Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is all about getting it back out. Organizations will need to be able to pull information out of disparate systems. They will then need to view all data with a Business Intelligence layer over the top.
Financial info is key for the risk sharing and cost cutting efforts involved in the ACO regs. Clinical info is key for the transition to evidence-based medicine, and outcomes tracking across all the parties involved in the ACO.
